Southern Utah Wine Events

February- March,  2015

 Thursday February 26

Wine and Cheese Class at Harmons Saint George

Wines and Cheeses from the South of France

The South of France was planted with wine grapes as early as 600 BC. Some of these varieties still exist today! Wine Educator and French Wine Scholar, Sheral Schowe, will lead you through an historical tasting of white, rosé, and red wines, paired with cheeses from the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.

Friday February 27

Wine and Cheese Class at Harmons Saint George

Big Red Wines from Around the World Paired with Cheeses

Big Reds are wines with a lot of tannin, a moderate amount of alcohol, tons of aromas and flavor, and the ability to age in your cellar for a while.  Wine Educator Sheral Schowe will present high scoring reds from California, Italy, South America, and Spain along with cheeses that create delicious synergy for a truly memorable evening.

WINE CLUB SOCIAL - August 10, 2014

The details for our August social are on the flyer below. Please be sure to RSVP to jeanthewinequeen@gmail.com  if you plan to attend.  Hope to see you there!

Details have been finalized for our social on Feb. 9.  We will be at the home of Jane Peterson, from 5:00 - 8:00 PM.  To RSVP for this event, please send e-mail to jeanthewinequeen@gmail.com. She will confirm your RSVP and send you the address.  As is our current custom, we ask that you bring a bottle of wine and a small appetizer to share.  We are also asking donations of $5 to build up our kitty so we'll be able to do more with the club in future (invite speakers, have a catered event, rent a hall, etc.).

WHAT'S NEW - OCTOBER 1st, 2013

We now have a PRIVATE Facebook Group called The St. George GrapeVine.  This Group is shared with St. George Wine & Food. This Grape Vine is Private so it is by invitation only and you will still need to be approved by a Group administrator to see posts and participate. It will only be open to the members and former members of both groups and other local wine lovers. Go here and click "Join" to get in on the news, information and conversations about wine and food!

Jean Dickson started a wine and food tasting group several years ago in St. George.  She has now joined our club, and along with a couple of other enthusiastic members, she will be helping us organize ourselves.  If you are interested in seeing what her club is about visit her website.  There is a waiting list to join, but occasionally she has cancellations and people who drop out.  If you are interested in being on the waiting list contact Jean.

Because of some great volunteers our club is starting to get it's act together!  Kristee Kilpack, Michael Proctor and Jean Dickson have stepped up to the plate to help us get organized.  We are planning to have an event every other month starting this October with the Halloween Bash.  Next event will be in December at the Loomis', February is TBA and Kristee Kilpack will be hosting the April event.  We will be announcing more about these events on this website and on the GrapeVine.

Thanks for your patience.

Make Sure We Have Your Contact Information
Facebook is wonderful for some things, but not the best way to push information to a group.  The typical FB user gets so many updates and alerts that a single comment from a group like ours is frequently lost in the shuffle.  While we will continue to use Facebook as a forum for group communication, information about club events will now be distributed primarily via e-mail.

We currently have 60 "likes" on Facebook, but only 19 e-mail addresses on our distribution list.  If you have not already done so, please use the "Join the Club" link on the sidebar of this page and enter your contact information.  Having everyone on e-mail will improve the odds that every member of the group knows about events well in advance.

Report from UNLVino 2012

This year's event was hosted at Bally's, and it went a bit rougher than 2011's bash at Paris. Once again it was heavily attended, but this year the layout made it difficult to relax and enjoy the many great wines, beers, sakes, foods and desserts.

Traffic was so heavy around the food items that they were nearly unreachable. Perhaps rectangular tables would have been better, allowing for lines on two sides? With round tables, there was no line -- just people milling around the table with others unable to get past. Additionally, with the event split between two rooms, there were some who didn't realize they were seeing only half of the vendors.

The wines, as expected, were very good. Unfortunately the event was tainted by the poor execution. I don't know where next year's event will be held, but I hope the organizers learned some lessons from this year and can get back to the level of service (and patron enjoyment) of years past.
